How to Find Your Real Size (and Why It Changes Between Brands)

Half of all returns come down to one thing: sizing by habit instead of by measurement. You are not always a 12, or a Medium, or a 32 — you are a set of measurements, and the label depends entirely on who sewed it.

Why brands disagree

There is no legal standard for what a size 12 means. Every brand drafts from its own fit model, and cuts drift over time. That is why the same person can be three different sizes in three different shops — nothing is wrong with you; the labels simply are not talking to each other.

Measure once, buy right forever

You need a soft tape measure and two minutes:

  • Bust/chest: around the fullest point, tape level, breathing normally.
  • Waist: at the natural crease when you bend to the side — not where your trousers happen to sit.
  • Hips: around the widest point, feet together.
  • Inseam: from the top of your inner thigh to where you want the hem to land.

Write them down in centimetres. Every product at TOPNEWPLACE is checked against our UK & EU Size Guide — match your numbers to the chart and ignore the letter on the label.

Reading the fit, not just the size

A "relaxed fit" in your true size is meant to sit loose — do not size down to make it slim. A "slim fit" is cut close through the body — if you are between sizes, go up, because fabric you can tailor is fixable and fabric that pulls is not.

If it still is not right

You are covered either way: every order has a 14-day cancellation right and 30-day returns. Details on our Returns page. But measure first, and odds are you will not need it.
